Zichang potato is a specialty agricultural product of Zichang City, Yan'an, Shaanxi Province. Zichang City boasts a suitable natural environment and a long history of cultivation. Zichang potatoes are high in starch content and rich in nutrients, making them widely popular among consumers.
Zichang City has been designated as the sole “Hometown of Chinese Potatoes.” In April 1995, at the inaugural “Hometown of Chinese Specialties” naming ceremony jointly organized by the Chinese Association of Agricultural Science Societies, the China Good Agricultural Products Development Service Association, the Development Research Center of the State Council, the China Specialty Products Press, the Economic Daily Press, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Zichang was officially honored as the exclusive “Hometown of Chinese Potatoes” among the first 100 recognized specialty regions.

I. Production Environment
Zichang City is located in northern Yan’an, situated in the heart of Shaanxi Province’s Loess Plateau region. The area features typical loess hilly and gully terrain, with a warm temperate semi-arid continental monsoon climate. Characterized by low temperatures and significant temperature variations, the region has an average annual temperature of 9.1°C and receives 514.7 mm of precipitation yearly, with a frost-free period of 175 days. The dominant soil type is loessial soil, known for its deep layers, loose texture, and high potassium content. These exceptional edaphic and climatic conditions make Zichang one of the most optimal growing regions for potatoes in China.
II. Cultivation History
Potato cultivation in Zichang dates back to the late Qing Dynasty. During the Republic of China, locals began processing potatoes into vermicelli (locally called “potato noodles”), but due to the small quantity, there was no significant development. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the local government vigorously promoted potato cultivation, leading to widespread adoption across Zichang. In 1999, a 448.6 m² sterile laboratory building, five seed breeding greenhouses, and two pillar-free net sheds were constructed. The “Potato Virus-Free Seed Breeding Center” was established to conduct adaptive comparative trials on 46 varieties. The varieties selected for promotion and planting in the county include Zaodabai, Jin No. 8 (Feiniaoruita), Kexin No. 1, Wanjinshu, Dongbeibai, Xiabodi, Kexin No. 2, Xingge No. 6, and Bashu No. 10. In 2000, 600,000 mu (40,000 hectares) of potatoes were planted, achieved a total output value of potato industry of RMB 209 million Yuan. Potato vermicelli, glass noodles, and potato starch became major foreign trade commodities in Yan’an City.

III. Product Characteristics
Zichang potatoes have smooth skin, regular shape, large and uniform size, and shallow eyes. The flesh is fine and dense, with high starch content, good palatability, strong disease resistance, slow physiological degradation, and rich nutrition. Potato starch is widely used in the pharmaceutical, paper, food, textile, construction, metallurgy, petroleum, and feed industries.
