
The Yanchang watermelon’s primary cultivars, Xinxiu and Zaochunhongyu, are oval-shaped with a fresh green rind decorated with green stripes. They have thin skin and typically weigh between 1.5 to 2.5 kilograms. The flesh has a sugar content ranging from 2 to 15 degrees, offering a tender and slippery texture with juice that is abundant, sweet, and honey-like, providing a refreshing and delightful sensory experience.
The technology of greenhouse watermelon cultivation in Yanchang county was initiated in 2002. Currently, the county has 6,800 mu of greenhouse watermelon cultivation with an annual yield of 13,900 tons. The "Yanchang Watermelon" is known for its excellent quality, characterized by its attractive color, delicious taste, and fine texture. It enjoys a substantial market share in Yan’an city and even the northwest China, being highly favored by consumers. In 2021 and 2022, the watermelon consecutively won the Third Prize at the 4th and 5th Municipal Vegetable and Melon Exhibition and Evaluation Conferences.
