Historical and Cultural Heritage

Yan’an stands as one of the cradles of Chinese civilization spanning five millennia, with the mausoleum of the legendary Huangdi- revered as the “Founding Ancestor of Chinese Culture”- resting atop Qiaoshan Mountain within its borders. Throughout history, Yan’an’s strategic position as a “frontier stronghold” and “crossroads of five routes” drew renowned military and political leaders, including Wu Qi, Meng Tian, Fan Zhongyan, and Shen Kuo, who left indelible marks through their martial and cultural exploits, scripting epic tales of heroism amidst war.

From 1935 to 1948, the CPC Central Committee and revolutionary pioneers like Chairman Mao Zedong resided and fought here for 13 years, leading the nation to victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the Liberation War while nurturing the enduring Yan’an Spirit. Renowned as China’s revolutionary epicenter, Yan’an serves as a national hub for patriotism, revolutionary tradition, and Yan’an Spirit education, as well as an outstanding tourist destination.

Its tourism resources, centered on the “Two Sages and Two Yellows” (Huangdi, Yan’an Spirit, Yellow Earth, and Yellow River), are unparalleled. The region boasts 8,545 historical sites, 445 revolutionary heritage sites (168 in urban areas and 277 in counties), 40 national key cultural relic protection units, 211 provincial-level units, and a collection of 68,995 cultural artifacts. Recognized as one of China’s first batch of historic and cultural cities by the State Council, Yan’an remains a timeless treasure trove of heritage.

Environmental and Natural Resources

Yan’an’s topography slopes downward from northwest to southeast, characterized by loess plateau hills and gullies dominated by tablelands (yuanin Chinese pinyin), ridges (liangin Chinese pinyin), and domed hills (maoin Chinese pinyin), with an average elevation of 1,200 meters. All rivers belong to the Yellow River system, and the region lies within an arid to semi-arid inland climate zone, marked by distinct seasons, abundant sunshine, and significant temperature variations between day and night.

Endowed with rich natural resources, Yan’an holds 1.38 billion tons of proven oil reserves, 11 billion tons of coal, and over 300 billion cubic meters of natural gas, with an estimated long-term reserve of 20 trillion cubic meters. Additional reserves include 200 million tons of purple clay, 19 billion cubic meters of coalbed methane (Yichuan), and 111.3 billion tons of rock salt, solidifying its role as a critical energy hub for China. Its vast land, deep soil layers, and optimal sunshine make it a global leader in apple cultivation, while high-quality agricultural products like apples, vegetables, red dates, and minor grains—including the famed “Luochuan Apple” (a nationally recognized brand)—enjoy international acclaim.
