Yan’an is located in northern Shaanxi Province, along the middle reaches of the Yellow River, between latitudes 35°21′–37°31′N and longitudes 107°41′–110°31′E. Nestled in the south-central Loess Plateau, it lies 371 kilometers north of Xi’an. The city borders Yulin to the north, the Guanzhong cities of Xianyang, Tongchuan, and Weinan to the south, Shanxi’s Linfen and Lüliang across the Yellow River to the east, and Gansu’s Qingyang to the west, covering a total area of 37,000 square kilometers.

Yan’an is an area with scattered and mixed settlements of ethnic minorities. Currently, 2,103 people from 32 ethnic minority groups have settled in the city, with the Hui, Manchu, Mongolian, and Zhuang populations being the largest, accounting for 71% of the total. In 2024, there were a total of 801 primary and secondary schools and kindergartens across the city, including 25 regular high schools, 15 vocational high schools, 87 junior high schools, 228 primary schools, 440 kindergartens, 6 special education schools, and 19 primary school teaching sites (not counted in the total number of schools). There were 457,000 students enrolled, with 53,500 in regular high schools, 14,400 in vocational high schools, 105,900 in junior high schools, 208,000 in primary
